What To Expect WHEN ADOPTING
BRINGING YOUR ADOPTED DOG HOME
What to Expect in the First Few Weeks
-
Bringing home a rescue dog is a beautiful choice, but often it takes time to adjust. A lot of new adopters have high expectations for their new companions, and while your dog can definitely grow into the companion you’re hoping for, this takes time, patience, consistency, and a lot of love.
Your Dog’s Experience
-
Your dog has gone through a lot of change between the time it was with Diamond from the Ruff and once it reaches its forever home. New people, new space, and new routines can be overwhelming. Mistakes are a normal part of this process, so please be patient as your dog learns and settles in.
The Adjustment Period
-
Any new addition to the household has an adjustment period, and this may take at least a few weeks (or more) for your dog and your household to settle in and feel comfortable with each other. Keep in mind that a dog may take up to a year to properly adjust to your home.
-
Consistency helps your dog feel safe. A few simple guidelines:
-
Let your dog eat and rest without interruption
-
Keep feeding routines consistent, designating a schedule early-on
-
Share responsibility for care and cleanup, between feeding, clean-up, walks, and bathing
-
Involve everyone in training, so your dog learns to respect everyone in the household
-
Housetraining Accidents
-
Even trained dogs may have accidents at first, especially with any new change in environment. In a new environment, it is important to be patient with your new companion and teach them your expectations calmly.
Learning the Rules
-
Your dog doesn’t know your home’s rules yet. They may test boundaries, like jumping on furniture or begging. Stay calm and consistent, and guide them with simple cues like “no” or “off.”
-
They will learn, it just takes time.
Creating a Safe Space
Give your dog a quiet space to retreat to—like a crate or a calm corner. When they’re there, let them rest undisturbed. Feeling safe helps them adjust and bond more easily.
